01 / INPUT

What you’ll need

Local XML, XML.GZ or ZIP sitemap files, or pasted XML. Optionally supply a CMS URL inventory, one URL per line.

02 / METHOD

How it works

Namespace-aware XML parsing extracts page URLs and image URLs separately. Sitemap indexes are matched to supplied child files; no website is fetched.

03 / SCOPE

Know the limits

50,000 page URLs; 25 MB total expanded input. External entities, unsafe ZIP paths and oversized archives are rejected. Missing children keep the audit incomplete.

GET FROM A QUESTION TO A NEXT STEP

Find what your sitemap and page inventory disagree about

Your CMS says a page is live, but the sitemap may omit it or an index may point to a child file you never supplied. This sitemap checker reconciles saved sitemap files with your intended inventory. Use it after a migration, a publishing change or a sitemap export. It helps distinguish a real URL discrepancy from a sitemap family that has not been fully examined.

How to use Sitemap Audit & Compare

  1. Upload the relevant XML, XML.GZ or ZIP files, or paste a sitemap. Include the child files when an index refers to them.

  2. Optionally add your CMS or planned URL inventory, one URL per line. Use a consistent inventory scope so the comparison is meaningful.

  3. Run the audit and review missing, duplicate and unexpected URLs. Investigate incomplete child coverage before calling the entire sitemap family clean.

What do the results mean?

A missing-from-sitemap finding means the supplied inventory contains a URL absent from the supplied sitemap evidence. It does not independently verify that the URL is live or indexable. Image entries are distinguished from page entries so they do not inflate page coverage.

What to do next

Fix the sitemap source or source inventory as appropriate. Generate a revised file if needed, then audit the new output against the same inventory.

Keep the scope in mind

50,000 page URLs; 25 MB total expanded input. External entities, unsafe ZIP paths and oversized archives are rejected. Missing children keep the audit incomplete.

A LITTLE MORE CLARITY

Common questions about Sitemap Audit & Compare

Will this crawl my website to discover missing pages?

No. The audit compares the files and inventory you provide. Use a CMS export or a trusted crawl to create the inventory you want to compare.

Why does an index audit stay incomplete?

An index can reference child sitemaps that were not supplied. Without those files, the tool cannot conclude that their page URLs are present or missing. Add the remaining children before interpreting total coverage.
